Obama Picks an Ex Federal Prosecutor to Lead the SEC

News summary by MFWire's editors

President Barack Obama will nominate former federal prosecutor Mary Jo White to the position of chairwoman of the Securities and Exchange Commission according to the Washington Post and numerous other publications.

White is currently a partner at Debevoise & Plimpton in New York. She previously served as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, which investigates many of the top financial crimes on Wall Street.

In that position, she prosecuted the terrorists responsible for bombing the World Trade Center in 1993 and of two U.S. embassies in Africa in 1998, according to the Post.

The news has been covered by a myriad of news outlets: HuffingtonPost: Politico; MarketWatch; The Journal News; USA Today; CNN, and News 10.

Previous SEC chairwoman Mary Schapiro had announced her resignation plans in November, after months of hard fighting over the issue of money market fund reforms, among other battles. Obama appointed Finra alum Elisse Walter as temporary chair soon after.
