Fidelity Persuades Media to Postpone Darfur Ads

by: InvestmentWires Staff,

Fidelity has persuaded CNN and Newsweek to pull advertisements critical of its investment practices, reported Joan Vennochi in the Op-Ed section of Thursday's Boston Globe. But Fidelity's books may already be more acceptable in the eyes of the Save Darfur Coalition, comments suggest.

Over the last several weeks, the Save Darfur Coalition has staged demonstrations against Fidelity and Berkshire Hathaway, urging investors to divest money both companies. The advocacy group says the two companies' investments in PetroChina, a Chinese oil company active in Sudan, mean they are effectively supporting the Sudanese regime responsible for ongoing atrocities in Darfur. Ads carrying this message were scheduled to run on CNN beginning May 1 and were also ready for the presses at Newsweek magazine.

But Fidelity claimed the ads are no longer accurate, CNN told the Globe. A CNN spokesperson said the network will wait to review investment information FiDo is to submit to the SEC within days before making a final decision.
