James McNamara Mourns a Goldman Sachs Vet

Reported by Nicole Spector

One of the Goldman Sachs [profile] great minds has, sadly, passed away.

The firm mourns Donald J. Mulvihill Jr., the former co-CIO of Goldman Sachs quantitative investment strategies. The husband and father of three lost a 15 month battle with leukemia on July 19. He was 56 years old.

Mulvihill joined Goldman Sachs in 1980 and served in a variety of roles in New York, Chicago, London and Tokyo, including playing a critical role in founding GSAM’s presence in Tokyo, the company said in an emailed statement. He joined the Quantitative Investment Strategies (QIS) team in 1999 and launched the team’s tax-efficient investment strategies for our high-net worth private clients. In 2010, Mulvihill was named the CIO of the QIS Customized Beta Strategies business.

James McNamara, president of Goldman Sachs Funds, released an exclusive statement to MFWire:
“Don was a friend and colleague for many years. While his contributions to the firm and the asset management industry over the past 33 years were numerous, he will be missed most for his kindness and his commitment to his family and friends. Our hearts go out to his wife, children and extended family during this difficult time.”
Mulvihill retired from Goldman Sachs just this past June. He was succeeded as PM to the Goldman Sachs Retirement Portfolio Completion Fund, the Goldman Sachs Global Tax-Aware Equity portfolios, and the Goldman Sachs Structured Tax-Advantaged Equity Funds by Gary Chropuvka.

A memorial for Mulvihill was held on Tuesday in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
