Ned Johnson Loses His Tomatoes

News summary by MFWire's editors

Beware the whitefly.

The small white, moth-like, garden pest has invaded the 42-acres of Backyard Farms, which is owned by Fidelity Investments [profile] employees, killing all of the farm's 420,000 tender, delicious plants, reports Shirley Leung of the Boston Globe.

Leung reports that Backyard Farms is the result of Johnson's love of tomatoes, which the Fidelity chief executive and chairman acquired during an Army stint in Europe during the 1950s.

Backyard, like virtually all of Johnson's inspired enterprises, was very successful until the scourge, Leung reports. The Boston Globe reporter notes that the nine-year old business is New England's largest supplier of premium tomatoes, distributed by roughly 30 employers, including Walmart and Whole Foods.
