A Veteran Midwestern Fund Entrepreneur Takes Things Up a Notch

Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

A quiet, midwestern mutual fund team is amping up its outreach, and a distribution expansion may be in the cards further down the line.

Tom Plumb, founding principal of Wisconsin Capital Management and president of its Plumb Funds, confirms that the Madison-based growth equity shop has ramped its business strategy in several ways recently. They've hired a public relations agency, SunStar Strategic, they're expanding their team, and they're upgrading their online presence. And ideally, that growth will bring economies of scale that will allow the shop to reduce its funds expense ratios.

"We revamped our website," Plumb tells MFWire. "The next step will be reaching out to broker-dealers that might put us on a platform and to RIAs directly. Initially we're going to craft our plan with SunStar on how to reach out to low-hanging fruit."

Further down the line, Tom Plumb expects that he and his son, Nathan Plumb, will bring on distribution experts.

"Nathan and I are going to continue to primarily focus on investment strategy and implementation ... We don't want to be distracted by creating the infrastructure for [distribution] at Wisconsin Capital Management," Plumb says. "We have not engaged any professional wholesalers. That might be something we'd consider a year from now."

Wisconsin Capital Management currently has about $150 million in AUM.
