An ETF Provider's Chief Will Take Over a Key Indexer

AN ETF chief is taking over a key indexer later this spring.

After thirteen years as CEO of New York City-based S&P Dow Jones Indices, Alex Matturi is retiring. Dan Draper. former global head of exchange traded funds, unit investment trusts and closed-end funds at Invesco [profile], will join S&P and succeed Matturi on June 15.

An Invesco spokesperson did not immediately return a call for comment. Draper has led Invesco's ETF business since 2013, when it was called Invesco Powershares.

Draper will serve as part of S&P's operating committee and will report to Douglas Peterson, president and CEO of S&P Global .

April Kabahar, global head of communications for S&P Dow Jones Indices told MFWire , "Dan Draper brings to S&P Dow Jones Indices a wealth of experience having held various leadership roles in asset management, wealth management and investment banking in his 27-year career. Matturi stated, "Dan Draper is an experienced index professional with exceptional knowledge of our business and the indexing landscape overall. I'm very proud of what the people at S&P Dow Jones Indices have accomplished these past thirteen years and am excited to see a leader of Dan's caliber step in to continue our long-standing culture of innovation, thought leadership and growth."

The leadership change news comes during heightened market volatility and the ongoing coronavirus crisis. Kabahar told MFWire that S&P Dow Jones Indices team continues "to see strong demand for our independent and transparent indices, data, research and analytics from our clients, investors and other market participants to help them make informed decisions especially in these times of market uncertainty and volatility."

"Our senior team of index strategists and research analysts have been tirelessly producing research and data to educate our clients on key market performance trends, indexing strategies," Kabahar continued.

In 2012, Draper was appointed as a finance leader’s fellow at the Aspen Institute and in 2018 he was appointed as board director of Alphapoint. In addition to currently maintaining these two positions, Draper is a chartered director and fellow at the Institute of Directors in the UK and is a board leadership fellow at the National Association of Corporate Directors in the United States.

In 2012, Matturi became a founding board member and past chairman of Index Industry Association. Matturi began working for S&P as an executive managing director in 2007. Before joining S&P, he was the senior vice president of Northern Trust Asset Management.

Draper has 27 years of industry experience. Prior to his role at Invesco as global head of exchange traded funds, unit investment trusts, and closed-end funds, Draper was a board director at AlphaPoint and managing director, global head of exchange traded funds at Credit Suisse.

Draper also has international experience, with asset management, wealth management, and investment banking experience in the United States as well as in Jakarta, London, and Hong Kong. Draper received his Bachelors of Arts in Economics from William and Mary and an MBA from the University of North Carolina's Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business school.

Matturi received a Law Degree from Syracuse University College of Law and a Bachelors of Science in finance from Lehigh's University College of Business.
