From SEC Chief to Two-Time NFL Investigator

News summary by MFWire's editors

A former top cop on Wall Street is officially investigating sexual harassment allegations for the National Football League, again.

Mary Jo White
Debevoise & Plimpton LLP
Partner
The NFL has reportedly informed the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Oversight and Reform that the league has hired Mary Jo White to lead the league's investigation of new allegations against Dan Snyder, owner of the freshly renamed Washington Commanders. (The team itself reportedly issued a statement expressing confidence in White and saying they won't do their own separate investigation.) The hiring of White follows the conclusion last July of a similar, separate workplace review of the Washington Commanders, led by a different attorney at a different law firm.

White, a former U.S. attorney, served as SEC chair from 2013 to 2017, under then-President Obama. (Among other things, her tenure included the finalization of some post-financial crisis money market fund reform regs.) She then returned to Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, where she remains today as a partner.

White is no stranger to the NFL or to such investigations. In 2018, she spearheaded an investigation into workplace misconduct (including sexual harassment) allegations against a now-former owner of another NFL team.
