Calamos Bets On Black

Reported by Irene Park

Calamos Investments [profile] has snagged former Janus Capital Group CEO Gary Black as its new global co-CIO. The appointment also secures the Calamos' acquisition of Black's Black Capital LLC, which adds a long/short equity capability to the firm and augments its existing alternative strategies.

Meanwhile, Black, 51, replaces fellow 51-year-old Nick Calamos — president of investments, co-CIO and nephew of founder, CEO and global co-CIO John Calamos, 72 — who, according to a press release, has opted to "pursue personal interests."

Together with John Calamos, Black will lead the investment team and oversee portfolio management, research, trading and risk management. Meanwhile, Nick Calamos will continue to serve as a member of the board of the directors.

Black certainly isn't a stranger to the media. Just four months after being tasked with strengthening Janus' intermediary-sold and institutional channels as Janus' new CEO, he showed his confidence in the firm by purchasing $1.5 million of company stock.

But Black's tenure as Janus CEO was short-lived. Just three years later, Black stepped down as CEO in the midst of rumors that names including Franklin Resources and OppenheimerFunds were looking at buying Janus. The firm also experienced a 75.9 percent drop in 2009 Q2 net income. Chairman Steve Scheid of Janus called the July 13, 2009, departure a "mutual decision"; meanwhile, Black told the MFWire, "the firm is in a much stronger place than when I joined, and the time is right for a change."

Black had succeeded Scheid as CEO in January 2006. He was replaced by interim CEO Tim Armour, who in turn was replaced by Pimco veteran Richard Weil.

After leaving Janus, Black founded Black Capital Management, a money management firm specializing in traditional long-only and absolute-return strategies to retail and institutional clients, in October 2009. He was also named to Grail Advisors' advisory board on Jan. 13, 2010.

According to Brightscope, Naperville, Illinois-based Calamos specializes in high-net-worth clients, with $33.6 billion in total AUM. Meanwhile, Black Capital has $72 million in AUM, with 1 advisor nationwide, Brightscope data shows. Gary Black was the majority owner of the firm before the acquisition.

Regarding the hiring of Black, John Calamos stated, "His expertise complements that of our long-tenured teams and supports our strategic roadmap for delivering investment performance and evolving our global investment platform."

Meanwhile, Nick Calamos stated, "It has been a privilege to work with John to help build and lead the Calamos investment team. I am confident that Gary will maintain our discipline of process and execution. The Calamos investment team is in good hands given Gary's significant experience in leading investment teams on a global basis."
