A Departing Distro Leader Reflects and Looks Ahead

Reported by Andrew Lusk

With a top distribution leader leaving the American wing of an Australian multinational asset manager at the start of 2023, new, calmer things are on the horizon for this exec.

Brett David Wright
Macquarie Asset Management
Outgoing Head of the Americas Client Solutions Group
Brett Wright, who is departing Macquarie Asset Management, tells MFWire that in his twelve years with the firm, he is proud of having accomplished a lot across a variety of roles. Wright has been head of the Americas client solutions group since 2020.

"One of the things that I'm particularly proud of is having the opportunity to have a meaningful place at the table setting vision and strategy for institutional and retail distribution," he says. "Part of that vision strategy on the retail side is the monumental tri-party acquisition we did of Waddell Reed [with] LPL. That'd be a capstone."

"That solidified our position as a top player in U.S. retail and put us closer to LPL in a major strategic relationship."

"Institutionally," Wright continues, "I feel quite proud that we did a global distribution overhaul where we combined the public and private teams — which are usually separate and distinct — into one, integrated team two and a half years ago."

"What I'm most proud of is the legacy of the leadership team that I left," he explains. "Rachel Jacobs, Paul Ames, and David Chorba all had the chance to come up under my tutelage ... If there's anything that I'd stand by relative to my brand, it's developing some really tremendous leadership."

(Jacobs serves as senior managing director and head of U.S. intermediary distribution in the Americas client solutions group at Macquarie, Ames as head of the institutional client solutions group, and Chorba as national sales manager and managing director for Macquarie's Delaware Funds.)

With his time with Macquarie coming to a close, Wright says he looks forward to spending time with his family and pursuing his health.

"I love to read, and I'd love to spend more time feeling healthy and energetic," he notes. "The next phase will be designing what the next phase of my career will look like."

Wright is spending the next few months consulting with his friends in the business to ask, "If you were in my shoes, what would you do from here?" He describes this as an opportunity to give thanks to his colleagues as well.
