Al Frank Hires COO

There is life after the dotcom bust. Al Frank Asset Management has hired Steven R. Samson as its chief operating officer, a newly created position.

Samson was most recently president of Alternative Investment Partners, which he co-founded, and chairman of AIP Mutual Funds. From 1999-2002, he was president of Kinetics Asset Management and chairman of Kinetics Mutual Funds. He was previously managing director at Chase Global Asset Management and Mutual Funds.

At present, he serves on the research and small funds committees of the Investment Company Institute.

The hiring of Samson, a 25-year industry veteran, comes as the Laguna Beach, California-based firm is looking to boost service to and sales through investment intermediaries, including the advisor sales channel, the company said.

Samson is tasked with directing the firm’s marketing, sales, product development and operational activities. In addition, he is responsible for overseeing branding and public relations efforts. "We believe the advisor market will continue its rapid growth at an even more accelerated pace over the next decade due to a number of factors, and want to be sure to maximize the distribution and relationship building potential it presents," Samson said in a statement.

"To this end, we have constructed a dedicated service and sales capability. This initiative will be complemented by a multi-faceted education, branding, and marketing initiative now being developed which will enhance our firm’s recognition among investors generally and raise our profile in the advisor community," he added.
