Cox, Spitzer Talk Enforcement

Christopher Cox, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer held a meeting Tuesday to discuss enforcement cases, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The meeting at the commission's headquarters in Washington, D.C. marked the first time that the two officials, who have previously spoken over the phone several times, met face-to-face.

Cox said the meeting was designed to heighten collaboration between federal and state regulators. "Working together, we can be much, much stronger," he was quoted as saying.

The discussion, Spitzer said, covered a "whole range of cases," including those related to mutual funds. He declined, however, to discuss specific probes.

The two officials will next meet in New York.
