Janus Promotes Goff and Hayes

Ever since the retirement of James Craig from Janus Capital in the fall of 2002 there has been speculation of an impending exodus from the Denver-based fund family. The theory is that executives were disappointed with the inclusion of the firm in the Stilwell Financial spin-off and the relative lack of control held by Janus executives. Yet, that exodus has not yet happened and two recent promotions suggest it may not start at all.

Without a doubt James Goff and Helen Young Hayes are the two most prominent stars remaining at the firm. The firm has now announced that it is promoting both to fill posts vacated by the retirement of Craig.

James Goff is the new director of research at Janus and Helen Young Hayes is now managing director of investments. Hayes will continue to manage two mutual funds but Goff will relinquish his fund management duties.

Jonathan Coleman will assume Goff's duties as portfolio manager of $8 billion in assets, including the Janus Enterprise Fund and the Janus Aspen Aggressive Growth Institutional fund. The changes are effective February 1.

"This structure will ensure that Janus' research-driven culture continues to be instilled throughout our expanding investment team," Thomas Bailey, chief executive officer and founder of Janus, said in a statement.

Late last year Janus also announced that Hayes would cease subadvising an outside fund in order to free more time for her duties at Janus.
