Vilar Pleads Innocence As Trial Looms

Alberto W. Vilar's trial starts this week at the United States District Court in Manhattan, with jury selection on Monday and opening arguments on Thursday. The besieged founder Amerindo Investment Advisors and former manager of the Amerindo Technology Fund opens up to the New York Times' Daniel J. Wakin, more than three years after Vilar and his colleague Gary Tanaka were first arrested for allegedly defrauding individual investors (see MFWIre, May 31, 2005). The charges themselves (none of which involve the Amerindo Technology Fund) followed a steep decline in Amerindo's assets thanks to the bursting of the dotcom bubble (see MFWire, March 28, 2003).
