Phillips Points MStar Toward 'Bigger Picture'

Want to find out more about how the Morningstar reorganization affects its core fund research and ratings approach? Take a look at Sam Mamudi's Tuesday Fund Track column in the Wall Street Journal to find out more. The piece follows up on the restructuring Joe Mansueto and company unveiled last week alongside fourth quarter earnings (see MFWire, 2/20/2009).

The WSJ tosses some ink to Morningstar managing director and new fund research president Don Phillips, who described the move as emphasizing "institutional-level insights ... for retail investors."

"It'll be a bigger picture, top-down approach to go along with the bottom-up work we've traditionally done," Phillips told the Journal. "My goal is for us to look at a fund portfolio through the eyes of a fund manager ... We want to do all we can to tear a portfolio apart and understand its risk."
