Neuberger Co-Founder Turns 106

Neuberger Berman co-founder Roy Neuberger celebrated his 106th birthday on Tuesday. Neuberger, who was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on July 21, 1903, started the company with Robert Berman in 1939. The firm rolled out one of the first no-load funds, the Guardian Fund, in 1950.

Neuberger Berman went public in 1999. In July 2003, a day after Neuberger turned 100 years old, Lehman Brothers announced a deal to buy Neuberger Berman. In May of this year, the company returned to independent life with the completion of an employee-led buyout.

Neuberger has maintained an office at the company until recently.

"The amazing culture he created still serves us well today as a once-again-independent firm — a prospect he was excited about — and we remain humbled by his example as we embrace new opportunities," said Neuberger Berman chairman and CEO George Walker in a statement.
