Abby Johnson Lands Near the Top of a New List

Fidelity Investments' president of personal and workplace investing, Abby Johnson, can hang another plaque on her wall. Online financial news outlet US Banker has named their Top 25 Nonbank Women in Finance, and for the second year in a row the pub honored Johnson with the number four spot, as she's "nearing the summit of the Mount Everest of mutual funds."

Johnson started as an analyst at the company her grandfather, Edward Johnson II, started. In May, she took over for her father Ned Johnson III as the chair of a board which oversees fixed-income and asset-allocation funds, and manages half of Fidelity's $1.2 trillion in assets. She is also a member of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation From 2001-2005, Johnson was the President of Fidelity Market Research. Additionally, she currently heads Fidelity Institutional Retirement Services.

Three spots behind Johnson is Kathleen Murphy, president of personal investing at Fidelity Investments, makes her top ten debut, sitting in the eighth position. Formerly the CEO of ING's U.S. wealth management unit, Murphy oversees 12 million Fidelity retail customer accounts containing $790 billion of assets.

Also on the list is Ariel Investments' Mellody Hobson. US Banker simply writes that "Mellody Hobson is everywhere." The president and chair of the board of trustees of the Chicago-based firm, Hobson is a constant presence in the media, educating people on effective investment. This year, the small/mid cap Ariel Fund has seen year-to-date returns of over 45 percent. Hobson is also a nominee on the MutualFundWire Top 40 Most Influential People in Mutual Fund Distribution list.
