New Head of MainStay Asset Management

Gary E. Wendlandt, formerly at Massachusetts Mutual, was named executive vice president of New York Life Insurance Co. He will head New York Life Asset Management, which serves three primary investor markets: retail mutual fund buyers; company and individual retirement plans; and institutional investors.

Wendlandt's new role at New York Life includes executive management responsibility for the company's stable value business; the MainStay Funds, the company's institutional and retail mutual funds; MacKay-Shields Financial Corp. and Monitor Capital Advisors Inc., the company's money management subsidiaries; and New York Life Benefit Services Inc., which specializes in retirement plans. He also becomes a member of New York Life's executive management committee, which is responsible for establishing the company's management policies.

As part of a series of organizational moves, Stuart H. Reese has been promoted to executive vice president and chief investment officer of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, with responsibility for all of the company's investment management activities. Reese, previously chief executive director of investment management, succeeds Gary Wendlandt, who is relinquishing his position to join New York Life. Bridget A. Macaskill, president and chief executive officer of OppenheimerFunds, Inc., MassMutual's mutual fund management subsidiary, will now report directly to Robert J. O'Connell, president and chief executive officer.
