Surprise Turn for Folio

As Foliofn shapeshifts with the rising tide, the firm appears to be morphing its way into yet another space: independent advisor trading platforms.

Currently, Folio's similarity to the Schwab-dominated field of competitors seems thin at best, especially since the firm has touted itself as a technology provider. However, one planned development and a step back from the tech angle produce a different picture.

What new feature will give Vienna, Virginia-based Folio a Madonna-like makeover?

A mutual fund marketplace.

"We have plans to add it, but it's a question of where it is on our priority list," said founder Steve Wallman. "We've decided to promote the things that are unique to Foliofn."

Wallman insists that Folio's core product is a "customizable brokerage account" and the firm is actively marketing to independent advisors, promoting its alliance with Advent. A mutual fund marketplace will round out Folio's platform, providing advisors with a basic suite of services.
