American Skandia Goes to College with Strong

American Skandia has launched the American Skandia College Savings Program, a 529 plan offering. The program will be administered by Strong Capital Management. Investors will have a choice of six investment options from the firm's multi-manager approach. The program is sponsored by the Nevada Office of the State Treasurer, but it will be available in all 50 states.

"In today's marketplace, saving for college through 529 plans is the most exciting area around," argued Michael Murray, American Skandia's national markets director of mutual funds. "This market is exploding." The firm cites a study from Cerulli Associates which concludes that the 529 business will have a total of $51 billion in 2006, up from $7.2 billion now.

Murray is getting aggressive when he states, "Parents are virtually negligent if they're not saving this way; the tax benefits alone are worth the price of admission."
