Rothschild Looks to Sub-Advise

An institutional asset manager wants to make a splash in the mutual fund business. Today Rothschild Asset Management (the New York-based sibling of the global investment bank) confirmed the hiring of Mike Tamasco as its first chief marketing officer, reporting to CEO Radey Johnson. And Tamasco, who is also a managing director and member of the asset manager's management committee, confided that Rothschild is making a push in the mutual fund business.

"We're looking to sub-advise mutual funds," Tamasco told The MFWire, noting that the institutional manager has traditionally focused on channels like defined benefit pension plans. "We're actively marketing to sub-advised mutual fund families."

"We expect that our philosophy of adding value through stock selection, while controlling for various benchmark risks and macro exposures, will be attractive to that market," Tamasco added.

Tamasco previously spent more than a decade at Lazard Asset Management, another New York-based asset management sibling of an investment bank. The MFWire could not immediately reach a Lazard spokesperson for comment on how Tamasco's duties are being handled.

Rothschild North America CEO Jim Lawrence described the addition of Tamasco as evidence of Rothschild's "commitment to [the] U.S. asset management business." And Johnson revealed that Tamasco may soon do some hiring of his own.

"In this new role, Mike will look to accelerate our new business development efforts and expand our sales team, while also enhancing the service and support we provide to clients and institutional consultants," Johnson stated.
