When Campanale Speaks, Will People Listen?

A shaper of the managed accounts business is planning to dust off and revive the E.F. Hutton brand. The WSJ reports that Frank Campanale leads a group of investors who are planning to launch a boutique advisory firm with the E.F. Hutton brand sometime in the coming weeks.

Campanale is working with Christopher Daniels, a former E.F. Hutton investment banker. Campanale himself was most recently with Birmingham, Michigan-based First Allied Securities.

Those in the mutual fund industry may have already called on Campanale during his long career at E.F. Hutton and then Smith Barney where he oversaw the brokerage firms' SMA businesses (or what became those businesses).

Campanale told the paper that he has been interested in the brand since before 2007, but had been rebuffed by Citigroup which was still using it.

The name was registered by Retriever Brands of Moorestown, New Jersey until April of 2011.

It appears that Campanale's group acquired the rights to the name in April through Dominant Brands LLC, which the paper states is "an entity managed by an affiliate of the new company."

"We recognize a huge hole here that was never really filled," Campanale told the WSJ.
