Thwaites Fights Poverty

Global poverty, be gone, says Christian Thwaites. The CEO of Montpelier, Vermont-based Sentinel Investments [profile] is joining the board of The Borgen Project, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting global poverty.

The Seattle-based nonprofit was founded in 2003 by Clint Borgen to provide aid for the worldwide poor and to bring global poverty to the attention of U.S. political leaders. It focuses on issues relating to the health of newborn children and their mothers, global food security and access to clean water.

In an interview with MFWire, Thwaites said that he has been involved with The Borgen Project for several years, and that his role on the board is similar to a consultant's.

"I give advice based on my experience from the world I operate in, the asset-management business, which may be able to help the project."

Thwaites said that he hopes his involvement will let the nonprofit's director devote himself to it full time.

"Clint Borgen is working himself to the bone, meeting with senators during the day and waiting tables at night. And his work is hugely impactful," Thwaites said. "They've had a good track record. Who knows where it will go?"

Thwaites will join fellow boardmembers including Washington State congressmen Adam Smith and Dave Reichert; Kip Knight, former VP of marketing for eBay and current president of KnightVision Marketing; Nazar Albaharna, former Bahrain minister of state for foreign affairs; William Garvelink, former U.S. ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo; and Jennifer Houston, president of WE Studio D at Waggener Edstrom Worldwide.
