Faust Buys in Canada

Eaton Vance [profile] will acquire a 49 percent share in Montreal-based investment management firm Hexavest Inc., several news media reported today.

Once the buy is complete, Eaton Vance will assume primary responsibility for Hexavest's new business development outside of Canada. Eaton Vance also plans to launch a series of new mutual funds in the U.S. and offshore markets sub-advised by Hexavest.

Neither Eaton Vance nor Hexavest representatives would disclose terms of the deal, which is expected to close in late August, Douglas Appell reported for Pensions & Investments.

The buy, if completed, will boost Eaton Vance's ability to offer strategies focused on international, global, and emerging markets equities. Building the capability to offer equities in non-U.S. markets has been an “important strategic priority for the firm," a spokeswoman for Eaton Vance told Pensions & Investments.

According to the proposed terms of the deal, Eaton Vance will also have the option to acquire an additional 26 percent interest five years down the line from the date of the deal's closing, Appell reported.

Besides Pensions & Investments, at least two other news media reported on the acquisition, including Market Watch and Boston Business Journal.
