DFA Preps Advisors for Succession Planning

Advisors who need help planning for a management transition can now call on Dimensional Fund Advisors [profile].

DFA has partnered with former Schwab RIA M&A chief Dave DeVoe to help advisors with succession planning. They've developed a program for advisors who work with DFA that includes "in-person workshops, electronic webinars, personal consulting from DeVoe himself, and peer coaching," writes James J. Green of AdvisorOne.

The program was developed by DeVoe in consultation with DFA VP for financial advisor services Bryce Skaff. Devoe left Schwab last November to start his own consulting firm, Devoe & Co., as AdvisorOne reported.

Called "Accelerating Success through Succession Planning," the new program lasts six month and requires 40 hours of class time. The training begins with the fundamentals of succession planning and includes individual coaching tailored to each participant. By the end of the program, DeVoe told AdvisorOne, each advisor will have a "tailored transition plan, a workbook on the fundamentals of M&A, and a Level-1 valuation" of his or her firm's value.

The program begins on February 12, 2013, and there will be 10 to 20 participants in the first group, DeVoe said. DFA's regional directors will identify advisors who could benefit from the program, and advisors pay for it themselves, though AdvisorOne could not get Skaff or DeVoe to reveal how much it will cost.
