A Mutual Fund Titan Closes In On the Active ETF Biz

Fidelity [profile] is inching closer to making its long-awaited entry to the ETF field.

Bloomberg's Christopher Condon reports that the firm has filed with the SEC for a series of active ETFs that would invest in stocks, bonds and other assets [SEC Filing].

The initial offering in this series, according to the filing, would be a corporate bond fund, but Condon thinks that this filing could be the first step in a plan to launch active stock ETFs.

"Fidelity has been working hard toward opening a series of actively managed ETFs modeled on its Select lineup of industry-focused stock funds, a person familiar with the matter said in July," writes Condon.

Condon thinks that Fidelity may be willing to live with the transparency requirements of active stock ETFs in order to break in to the market. He notes that the SEC filing says that the stock funds would be fully transparent.

In August, Fidelity hired Anthony Rochte to develop its ETF business.
