Undiscovered Fundsters, This M* Writer Can Introduce Advisors to You

Boutique PMs and fundsters marketing their wares, there's another writer at Morningstar whom you may want to get to know. The Chicago-based mutual fund ratings shop's magazine for financial advisors has a new editor, and he's focused on smaller mutual funds.

Rob Wherry confirmed that in June he joined Morningstar Advisor magazine as associate editor. He works on the "Undiscovered Manager" column about funds that are under $1 billion in assets, and he told MFWire that he probably spends about 50 percent of his time now on that subject.

"I like to cover those types of funds," Wherry said. "They're hidden gems so they deserve to be in the spotlight every once in a while."

Wherry is part of an editorial team of three at the magazine, which comes out six times and reaches about 60,000 advisors. Jerry Kerns is the editor of the publication. Wherry confirmed that his position at the magazine "had been unfilled for a while," so he didn't fill someone else's shoes.

Prior to his promotion in June, Wherry spent three years at Morningstar as a fund analyst. Before that he did a fellowship at Columbia, served as a senior editor for SmartMoney.com and staff writer for its magazine, and spent six years as a reporter at Forbes. At SmartMoney Wherry also wrote about mutual funds, whereas at Forbes he covered energy, personal finance and small business.
