Boutiques? Bistros? Nightlife? Developers Redesign Fido's Devonshire Digs

Bring your tuxes and your high heels, and also a sledge-hammer.

Boston developer Related Beal is planning a major makeover for the five-buildings formerly owned by Fidelity on Water, Congress and Devonshire streets.

The new vision, created by the architecture firm Arrowstreet, will transformer the formerly dowdy Devonshire complex into a modern commercial space boasting boutiques, restaurants, a hotel, nightlife spots and other attractions.

The news understandably caught the attention a number of publications, Boston-based and otherwise, including Boston Globe, , Press Herald, WCVB, Boston.com, Boston Herald, CPExecutive, Bostinno, DailyFreePress, CBRE.US.

According to the Boston Globe, an investment fund that is rub by Related Beal bought the properties, located on 40 Water St., 68 Devonshire St., 19 Congress St., and 15 Congress St., from Fidelity for an undisclosed sum in December 2013. Fido will still occupy the properties, which currently include 343,000 square feet of office and retail space, until the end of this year.

The reborn complex, which will also tout Quaker Lane as a revamped retail destination, will be called Congress Square.

The plan still needs to be approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority.
