"Should We Consider Potentially Curtailing the Growth of ETFs?"

ETF fundsters, beware; the SEC is taking a long, hard look at you.

Luis Aguilar
U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission
Commissioner
On Thursday at a meeting of the regulatory agency's investment advisory committee (IAC), Commissioner Luis Aguilar raised a number of potential concerns about ETFs in the wake of the pain of the August 24 plunge. Near the end of his remarks he asked if he and his fellow commissioners "should consider potentially curtailing the growth of ETFs?"

SEC Chair Mary Jo White also mentioned exchange-traded products in her remarks to the committee.

Both Barron's and the Wall Street Journal reported on Aguilar's remarks.

Aguilar offers more than half a dozen bullet points of concern about the markets and ETFs. One quote in particular is getting a lot of attention.

"Why ETFs proved so fragile that morning [August 24] raises many questions, and suggests that it may be time to reexamine the entire ETF ecosystem," Aguilar said.

ETF folk who want a hint of what's on the SEC's mind should read Aguilar's full remarks.
