A Smart-Beta Pioneer Steps Back, But Not Out

One of the biggest names in smart beta is taking a step back, though he's not leaving the business just yet.

Katy Sherrerd has succeeded Rob Arnott as CEO of Newport Beach, California-based Research Affiliates, Institutional Investor and Pensions & Investments report. Yet Arnott remains at RA as chairman and a PM.

Sherrerd already served on RA's board and as president and chief operating officer. She will reportedly keep the president title in addition to her new one of CEO, yet the COO spot will not be filled for now.

"Katy has been running day-to-day operations at Research Affiliates for many years and this promotion simply formalizes her position," Arnott tells II in a statement. "I will continue to dedicate my time to areas that I am most passionate about."

Arnott founded RA in 2002. The firm has grown not through direct retail or advisor business but through alliances with other firms like nearby titan Pimco; as of June 30, 2018, RA's strategies power $197 billion in AUM in outside mutual funds, ETFs, SMAs, and other vehicles.

Arnott, an alumnus of UC Santa Barbara, worked at the Boston Company, First Quadrant, Salomon Brothers, and TSA Capital Management before founding RA. As RA has grown, he has become one of the faces of smart beta.

Sherrerd, an alumna of both the University of Virginia and MIT, joined RA in 2006 after nearly 20 years at the CFA Institute.
