How Far Can You Bike, Walk, or Run for Cancer Survivors?

The Boston-based Expect Miracles Foundation, Financial Services Against Cancer (#CancerIsntFree), a charity run by mutual fund industry veterans that raises money for cancer treatments and provides assistance to those financially devastated by cancer, has launched a new fundraising challenge for the summer.

Frank Heavey, executive director of the foundation, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Expect Miracles (Social) Distance Challenge will kick off on Monday, June 15, starting with a biking challenge that lasts through Sunday, June 21. On Monday, June 22, the walking and running portion of the fundraiser will begin, which lasts through the following Sunday.

The (Social) Distance Challenge begins as most states reopen in some capacity, allowing participants to go outside and exercise within the social distancing parameters still in place. There is no fee to register, and participants are encouraged to join either individually or as a team.

"How many miles would you bike, run, or walk to make an impact on those dealing with cancer?" reads the challenge's advert. "Find out by joining one or both of the Expect Miracles (Social) Distance Challenges with colleagues, friends, family members, or individually!"

Winners will be recognized for highest mileage by an individual and highest fundraising by an individual.

After the foundation's two largest fundraisers, which typically raise around $3 million total, were postponed earlier this month due to COVID-19, an online alternative was configured. The Putting Challenge was created for anyone with a formidable short game, the space for indoor putting, and a passion for helping those afflicted by cancer. This was the first initiative Expect Miracles put out for its COVID-19 fund, for cancer survivors whose finances are impacted by the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Expect Miracles has helped more than 1,500 individuals through more than $2 million in individual grants. The research side of the organization has given more than $10 million over the course of 25 years.
