Steers Passes the Reins

A non-founder is poised to take over a publicly traded mutual fund firm after 29 years with the 35-year-old company.

Joseph M. "Joe" Harvey
Cohen & Steers, Inc.
President, Board Member
Today, Joe Harvey (age 57), president of Cohen & Steers, Inc. [profile], and Bob Steers (age 68), co-founder and CEO, confirm that on March 1, 2022, Harvey will rise to CEO. Steers will become the firm's executive chairman. The firm's other co-founder, Marty Cohen (age 72), will remain chairman of the board, a company spokesperson confirms.

The move comes after Harvey temporarily rose to acting CEO back in February while Steers was recovering from surgery. (Steers returned to his duties on June 1.)

"Joe has been here since the early days of Cohen & Steers and has been integral to our firm's many accomplishments," Steers states. "I ... know that he will be highly effective at taking our firm to new heights."

Harvey joined Cohen and Steers in 1992 as a REIT analyst. He rose to PM in 1998 and to president and chief investment officer in 2019. Earlier, he worked with Robert A. Stanger & Co. He is an alumnus of Princeton University.
