A Jersey PM-Turned-FA Dies At 79

A Garden State veteran portfolio-manager-turned-financial-advisor died last month.

Stephen Humphrey died on September 9. He was 79 years old.

Born in New Rochelle, New York in 1944, Stephen Robert Humphrey later earned his BA from Morgan State University, his MBA from the New York Institute of Technology, and his J.D. from Touro College's Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center.

Humphrey spent 20 years with Chase Manhattan Bank (now part of J.P. Morgan), eventually serving as PM of the Chase Vista Select Large Cap Growth Fund. In 1999, he joined Lord Abbett, and in 2000 he was the launch PM for the new Lord Abbett Large Cap Growth Fund.

Humphrey later shifted to the wealth management side of the business, joining Wachovia Wealth Management in 2002 as an FA. He later worked with BNY Mellon, Beacon Trust, Lincoln, and Humphrey Wealth Management.

"We are saddened by the passing of Stephen Humphrey and wish to express our condolences to his family, friends, and former colleagues," Jim Sansevero, partner at Lord Abbett, tells MFWire via email. "Stephen's professionalism and commitment to serving the firm's clients truly exemplified the best of Lord Abbett."

Humphrey was known as a basketball fan, a golfer, martial arts practioner, oenophile, and reader. He was also a devout Christian.

Humphrey is survived by his wife, daughter, sister, and a host of other relatives. Visitation was held on September 17 at the William J. Leber Funeral Home in Chester, New Jersey, and a funeral mass was held on September 18 at Mount Olive Community Bible Church in Mount Olive, New Jersey. Humphrey was interred at Pleasant Hill Cemetary in Chester.
