Fools Rush In

Retail fund houses may have to fork over $149 to keep tabs on a yet another fund investor newsletter -- this time from the influential creators of Fool.com.

Tom and David Gardner, longtime critics of active money management and co-founders of Fool.com, have started a newsletter dedicated to finding the crème de la crème of funds.

The move is a bit hypocritical considering that the Fools criticized funds and other active money-managers for years, says Chuck Jaffe of the Boston Globe.

Nevertheless, the Motley Fool Champion Funds newsletter editor Shannon Zimmerman explains: "Sure, the average mutual fund loses to the S&P 500 over time. But the funds we'll focus on are far from average. We'll separate the duds from the keepers, and we'll zero in on just those select few that have what it takes to beat the market over the long haul: low costs, talented managers, and successful strategies that have fared well in up markets and down."

"In short, if you own mutual funds (and who doesn't?) Champion Funds will help make you a smarter fund investor," states Zimmerman.

Sounds like great news for the top 25 percent (of the 25 percent) of you out there.
