What is now Barrett Asset Management was founded in 1937 by C. Redington Barrett. His son, John D. Barrett II, took over the company in 1970 and is still on board as chairman of the fund firm.
In 2001, Barrett Associates became an affiliate of multi-boutique asset manager Legg Mason [profile]. Legg spun Barrett off in 2011, selling the boutique back to its management team. Barrett remains employee-owned and managed today.
Barrett currently manages a pair of mutual funds, the Barrett Growth Fund and the Barrett Opportunity Fund, with about $79 million in combined mutual fund AUM as of December 2016. The firm currently manages more than $1 billion in total assets.
