Previously known as 1-800-Mutuals and Mutuals.com, USA Mutuals offers two mutual funds. Both funds date back to 2002 and both connect to its slogan, "Invest Your Knowledge." That slogan emphasizes offering investors access to investments that target sectors and concepts that the investors themselves can understand.
The famous Vice Fund is a growth fund focused on four sectors -- alcohol, casinos, defense and weapons, and tobacco -- seen as resistant to economic volatility. The Generation Wave Growth Fund emphasizes sectors seen to benefit from the Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. Gerard Sullivan, former head of the Industry Leaders Fund and current chief investment officer of Claremont Investment Partners, PMs both USA Mutuals funds. He took over from Jeffrey Middleswart on June 1, 2011.
USA Mutuals has historically been a direct-sold, no-load fund family. Yet it is now tied in to an advisor-sold fund firm. On April 1, 2011, Jerry Szilagyi, founder and CEO of Catalysts Capital Advisors [see profile], took Eric Lansky's place as president and CEO of USA Mutuals. Szilagyi now leads both USA Mutuals and Catalyst.
"They are two separate legal entities," Szilagyi told MFWire.com in June 2011, "and there are no plans to combine them at all."
Watch for Szilagyi to lead USA Mutuals into the advisor-sold, load-based mutual fund space.
