TIAA-CREF, the financial services organization and leading provider of retirement services in the academic, research, medical and cultural fields, announced the election of Dorothy Robinson to the TIAA Board of Trustees. Ms. Robinson is Vice President and General Counsel of Yale University, where she has served as chief legal counsel for more than twenty years. She will serve on the Customers and Products Committee and Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility Committee.

"Ms. Robinson has gained extraordinary insight into the academic and research world during her 20 years of leadership experience at one of our country's finest educational institutions," said Herb Allison, chief executive of TIAA-CREF. "Our organization will benefit from her perspective as we strive to meet the financial needs of those who serve the greater good."

Ms. Robinson was elected by the TIAA Board which consists primarily of independent trustees -- individuals who are not executive officers or former employees of TIAA or CREF.

"On behalf of the TIAA Board of Trustees," said Presiding Trustee of the TIAA Board Ronald L. Thompson. "I express a warm welcome to Ms. Robinson and look forward to working with her as we fulfill our obligation to serve in the best interests of our policy holders."

Previously, Ms. Robinson held positions as Deputy General Counsel, Director of Federal Relations and Associate General Counsel of Yale University. Before coming to Yale in 1978, she practiced law with Hughes Hubbard & Reed in New York City.

Ms. Robinson received her B.A. in economics, with honors, from Swarthmore College (where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa) in 1972. She received her J. D. in 1975 from the University of California School of Law (Boalt Hall), where she served on the California Law Review. She is a member of the bar for the states of Connecticut, New York and California, and of various federal courts.

Ms. Robinson has served on the Boards of Directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and on committees, task forces and advisory boards of numerous other national organizations concerned with higher education. Among these, she served on the Association of American Universities Task Force on Research Accountability, and on the Association of American Medical Colleges Task Force on Financial Conflicts of Interest in Biomedical Research. She is a regular columnist for Trusteeship, a magazine of the Association of Governing Boards.

Ms. Robinson has also served on boards of trustees for a variety of other educational, research, charitable and community organizations. Among these, she served from 1991 until 2003 as a trustee of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research. She also is currently on the Board of Directors of Newark Public Radio, Inc.
