An Asset Manager Lures Away a BlackRock Quant Expert


Just weeks after the departure of former chief investment officer Enrique Chang from American Century Investments, the $120 billion asset manager has now hired a head of quant research.

The Kansas City- firm has lured Vinod Chandrashekaran away from BlackRock to work at American Century as senior vice president and director of quantitative research.

In his role, Chandrashekaran will reportedly lead the quantitative research efforts for American Century’s Quantitative Equity discipline and is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the security selection models used by the quantitative equity strategies.

He also is being named co-portfolio manager for American Century’s Non-U.S. Systematic Large Cap Value (International Value) and Non-U.S. Large Cap Core (International Core) strategies.

Meanwhile, Yulin Long vice president and senior quantitative analyst, is taking on additional responsibilities as co-portfolio manager of the Non-U.S. Systematic Large Cap Value (International Value) and Non-U.S. Large Cap Core (International Core) strategies with Chandrashekaran and current Portfolio Manager Elizabeth Xie, Ph.D, CFA.

Further, portfolio manager Armando Lacayo, who previously served on the team managing the Non- U.S. Systematic Large Cap Value (International Value) and Non-U.S. Large Cap Core (International Core) strategies, has decided to leave the company to pursue a new career opportunity outside of the asset management industry, according to the company.

KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 26, 2013 — American Century Investments has named former BlackRock/Barclays Global Investors (BGI) executive Vinod Chandrashekaran, Ph.D., senior vice president and director of quantitative research. In his role, Chandrashekaran leads the quantitative research efforts for American Century’s Quantitative Equity discipline and is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the security selection models used by the quantitative equity strategies. He also is being named co-portfolio manager for American Century’s Non-U.S. Systematic Large Cap Value (International Value) and Non-U.S. Large Cap Core (International Core) strategies.

Reporting to Chief Investment Officer for Asset Allocation and Quantitative Equity Scott Wittman, CFA, CAIA, Chandrashekaran’s appointment was effective April 22. He is based in Mountain View, Calif., home to the firm’s quantitative equity portfolio management team.

“Vinod brings substantial quantitative expertise to his role, having developed, managed and enhanced security selection and risk models at various well-respected quantitative firms,” said Wittman. “He also brings experience in the areas of implementation research and risk-management, which will complement our capabilities. Vinod will be a key contributor to our team as we strive to deliver strong returns on behalf of our clients.”

During his 10 years with BlackRock/BGI, Chandrashekaran served in a number of senior leadership positions. Since 2010, he’s been the head of risk management for the firm’s Quantitative Equity and Global-Macro strategies. Other roles have included head of implementation research for BGI’s Quantitative Active Equity teams and head of the U.S. Large Cap Equity portfolio management team. Previously, he was with Barra Inc., where he served as head of equity research.

Chandrashekaran holds a B.Tech (bachelor of technology) in electronics from the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras, India) and a post-graduate diploma in management from the Indian Institute of Management (Calcutta, India). He earned a master’s degree and Ph. D. in finance from the University of California at Berkeley.

Additionally, Yulin Long, Ph.D., vice president and senior quantitative analyst, is taking on additional responsibilities as co-portfolio manager of the Non-U.S. Systematic Large Cap Value (International Value) and Non-U.S. Large Cap Core (International Core) strategies with Chandrashekaran and current Portfolio Manager Elizabeth Xie, Ph.D, CFA. Long has been a member of the American Century’s quantitative research team since joining the firm in 2005. She holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Beijing University, an M.Phil (master of philosophy) in accounting from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a Ph.D. in accounting from Stanford University.
