NYTimes Catches Smart-Beta Fever

The rise of so-called "smart beta" has caught the eye of the Wall Street Journal, and now the New York Times is watching, too.

In today's issue of the Times', Jeff Sommer outlines the rise of index investing, starting with Nobel prize winner Paul Samuelson's call to arms in 1974 and Vanguard [profile] founder Jack Bogle's S&P 500 stock index fund answer two years later. The column then moves on to the rise of two fundamental indexers, Research Affiliates (whose work powers ETFs for both PowerShares [profile] and Schwab [profile]) and WisdomTree [profile], as well as pseudo-indexer Dimensional Fund Advisors [profile].

Bogle himself, DFA chairman David Booth, RA investment management chief Chris Brightman, Morningstar analyst Alex Bryan, Vanguard investment strategy group principal Fran Kinniry and WisdomTree senior investment strategy adviser Jeremy Siegel all chimed in for the article.
