A Golden Anniversary For Fund Education

A transformed trade group's members are trumpeting a big anniversary.

George Riedel, head of U.S. intermediaries at T. Rowe Price and chairman of the Investment Management Education Alliance (IMEA), confirms that the IMEA is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The organization launched in 1971 as the No-Load Mutual Fund Association, rebranded in 1990 as the Mutual Fund Education Alliance (MFEA), and then rebranded again in 2018 as IMEA.

Michelle Smith, who served as managing director of the group from 1990 through 2010, recalls the creation of its executive councils, to fill "the need for like-minded executives to exchange views with their counterparts in key business areas": hence the formation of the councils and their events. IMEA's councils now include: a digital council; a distribution council; an education council; a marketing council; and a product council. And they're forming a new one: the ESG council.

"IMEA is where the work gets done," Riedel states, noting that T. Rowe has been involved since the get-go; the trade group's first chairman was Charles Schaeffer, then-president of T. Rowe.

IMEA now has 36 member fund firms.
