Why Did Carillon Tower Create a CMO Position?

In the past, marketing at Carillon Tower Advisers has been self supported. However, in efforts to raise awareness and continue growth after recent acquisitions, a CMO role was created, and the national search was on to fill it.

Effective April 17, 20-year marketing executive in the asset management industry, Renee Baker, was appointed as the first chief marketing officer of Carillon Tower, a St. Petersburg, Florida based global asset management firm that supports autonomous boutiques.

"I accepted the role as CMO due to my background, and skill sets," Baker tells MFWire.

In her new role, Baker will manage the firm’s overall marketing efforts including digital strategy, brand advertising, PR, and more. She will report directly to Cooper Abbott, president and chairman of Carillon Tower.

Baker joins the Carillon team as they prepare to acquire Scout Investments, a $4.8 billion equity investment firm located in Kansas City, Missouri, and Reams Asset Management, a $23.3 billion fixed income investment firm located in Columbus, Indiana.

"Both Scout and Ream have a lot to offer, and we want to share that with our clients," Baker states. "This acquisition will help elevate our portfolio."

This new position does not replace any roles at any of Carillon's affiliates, like Eagle Asset Management, ClariVest Asset Management, and Cougar Global Investments. In fact, Baker will play a role in distributing marketing support for all three.

Carillon's parent, the publicly traded broker-dealer Raymond James, also has its own marketing team.

Prior to joining Carillon, Dr. Baker was employed at Aberdeen Asset Management in a senior marketing position, with similar responsibilities yet at a smaller scale.

A representative from Aberdeen was not immediately available for comment on how Baker's duties are being handled.

Baker holds a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, a master’s in business administration from The Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business, and a doctorate in business administration from Wilmington University.
