Dodge & Cox, Fidelity, and Pimco Win Big

The teams at Dodge & Cox, Fidelity, and Pimco may be breaking out the champagne this week for their virtual happy hours.

Sonali Pier
Pimco
Managing Director, Portfolio Manager
Yesterday, Sarah Bush, director of manager research for North America at Morningstar, revealed that the winners of the 2021 Morningstar Awards for Investing Excellence are: Dodge & Cox; Sonali Pier of Pimco; and Joel Tillinghast of Fidelity. Both Tillinghast and Dodge & Cox have been nominated all three years that the M* team has done these newer awards (though neither previously won), while Pier is a first-time nominee this year.

Dodge & Cox won this year's "exemplary stewardship" award (the only one of the three awarded at the firm level as opposed to individuals).

Pier won this year's "rising talent" award. (One of her Pimco colleagues won the award last year.) An eight-year Pimco veteran, she serves as a managing director and is one of the PMs on the Pimco Diversified Income Fund. She previously worked as a credit trader at J.P. Morgan and is an alumna of Princeton University.

Tillinghast won this year's "outstanding portfolio manager" award. A 35-year veteran of the Boston Behemoth, he has been the lead PM on the Fidelity Low-Priced Stock Fund since 1989. Before joining Fidelity, he was a futures analyst at Drexel Burnham Lambert and an equity analyst at Value Line. He is an alumnus of Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and of Wesleyan University.
