  • Background:
Yorktown Management and Research Company is a family-run business dating back to 1985, with ties to the Mason side of mutual fund titan Legg Mason.

Chip Mason, founder of Legg Mason, is the nephew of Aubrey L. Mason, grandfather of current Yorktown managing director David M. Basten. David M's father, David D. Basten, serves as president and chief investment officer. David M's sibings are involved, too: his brother Duff Basten is chief compliance officer, sister Brentz East is a PM, brother Walter Basten is a marketing associate, and sister-in-law Katie Basten is a research associate.

David M.'s great-grandfather Walter G. Mason started Scott, Horner & Mason in 1927. That firm later became Mason & Lee, and Walter hired Chip in 1957. Chip left in 1959 to launch Mason & Company, which later became Legg Mason. And Chip even acquired Mason & Lee in 1980.

Through the API Funds brand, Yorktown offers six broadly diversified mutual funds, investing in index funds, ETFs, closed-end funds, and other active managers, in addition to individual stocks. The company also offers its API Master Allocation Models that blend its funds. The funds offer A and L shares (and two also offer institutional shares).

They describe their ultimate investing goal as earning "admirable returns with as little risk and worry as possible." Their value proposition is that they are a family-owned firm that has a personal relationship with the advisors using their funds, maintaining an open dialogue with those advisors and their clients. The Yorktown team is proudly off-Wall Street and boutique.

Yorktown makes a point of making its funds accessible to small investors. The minimum account size for each of its offerings is a mere $1,000.
