Week of April 5, 1998
Monday, April 6, 1998. The New York Times.
Richard W. Stevenson in "Privatizing Social Security Gains Backers in Congress" reports that members of Congress are discussing Social Security reforms -- a move once considered electoral suicide -- without fear of political backlash. The author states that more and more people are becoming confident with the intricacies of the financial world as mutual funds, 401(k)'s, and other investment options flourish. According to the DoL, the number of people in a 401(k) plan is 27 million, up from 7.5 million in 1984.

Sunday, April 5, 1998. The New York Times.
According to Abby Schultz in "401(k)'s Can Be a Great Place to Trade Your Company's Stock", participants may have an advantage over investment managers on Wall Street when it comes to their own employer's stock. They will know whether their company is doing well in sales and other measurement's of a firms economic health. Schultz does mention that many experts believe that it is risky for employees to invest heavily in company stock because if the company starts to do poorly then individuals could find themselves in double jeopardy. But, she adds, if participants are to purchase company stock, then the 401(k) is the place to do it...

Will Merger Mania on Wall Street End Up on 401(k) Avenue?
Are Howard Johnson and Trustmark next? Once again Wall Street has entered its silly-merger mood, and defined contribution vendors are not being left out of the party. Today's merger of Citibank and Travelers into Citigroup is the largest merger in history and is valued at nearly $75 billion. Of course, this combination did not come from out of the blue. As recently as Friday, Citibank was was rumored to be interested in Merrill Lynch. The giant size of the merger does not seem to have satiated the Street. Stocks of many of the leading financial service companies are rising. In the past few weeks merger-talk has fingered J.P. Morgan and Merrill Lynch as targets of banks such as Chase, Britain's HSBC, or Germany's Deutsche Bank, and -- more specifically to the defined contribution business -- Schwab's Trustmark unit and Howard Johnson & Company...
