The chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission underwent surgery for removal of thymoma on Monday.

Christopher Cox, 53, is expected to be back to work in mid-February, the commission said in a release last Friday.

Cox, a former California Republican congressman, was appointed by President Bush last June to lead the commission, succeeding William Donaldson.
