The Grass is Green on Diamond Hill

News summary by MFWire's editors

Anyone been to Diamond Hill in Ireland? The hill gives the name to Diamond Hill Capital Management [see profile], reports the Columbus Dispatch.

Mark Williams profiles the Columbus, Ohio-based mutual fund firm and its founder who once worked at Loomis, Sayles & Co. The 10-year-old fund family now boasts $8 billion across seven funds.

The paper talks to CEO and chief investment officer Ric Dillon, who describes Diamond Hill's origins from the Bank Stock Group. He adds that mutual fund start-up lost $7 million in the first four years. Days are better now: in the first three quarters of this year it has turned a profit of $7.9 million on revenue of $41.2 million.

"We've had a good performance, essentially going from zero to $8 billion in the first 10 years," Dillon tells the paper. He adds that has grown to 62 from the initial five. That includes 19 research analysts and seven portfolio managers overseeing the company's funds.

The firm now sports a market cap of more than $200 million and averages 65 basis points in fees across all of its assets.

Dillon also details his investment strategy (Diamond Hill is value shop).
