Gundlach Attacks the Myth of Passive

Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

Jeffrey Gundlach is center stage at Lincoln Center, though he hasn't switched back to his music career. Oh, and he has a new social media voice, too.

DoubleLine
CEO
He's speaking about "investment cubism" and taking shots at U.S. long-only equity managers and indexers alike.

"Passive investing is a myth. It doesn't exist," Gundlach says. "It's just rules-based investing."

"Toss them out of the window," Gundlach adds.

As an aside, Gundlach mentions that he's never been much for social media. Yet that just changed.

"Today in the car over here I opened a Twitter account," Gundlach says.

Gundlach, CEO and chief investment officer of DoubleLine Capital [profile], has 20 minutes to speak to the 3,000-plus people at the 22nd annual Sohn Investment Conference at David Geffen Hall in New York City. Other investing gurus speaking today include a host of hedge fundsters bigwigs, like David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital and Bill Ackman of Pershing Square. Jeff Gordon, four-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion, also made an appearance.

Gundlach spoke at Sohn a year ago, too, analyzing various U.S. presidential campaign slogans over the years and publicly predicting Donald Trump's election victory.

The Sohn Conference Foundation hosts the annual conference, and others around the globe, to raise money to fight childhood cancer (and other childhood diseases). The foundation has raised more than $75 million over the past 22 years.
