Baron's Ex-Distribution Chief Takes Over a Niche Fund Firm

Reported by Neil Anderson, Managing Editor

Brian Jacobs just landed in a new post as the head of an alternatives-focused mutual fund firm. Yesterday Hatteras Funds confirmed that Jacobs joined up as CEO, with current CEO David Perkins continuing to serve as chairman.

Jacobs previously served for 10 years as director of sales at Eaton Vance and for eight years as managing director of sales distribution at Allianz Global Investors (which distributes both Pimco's and Allianz's mutual funds). He most recently held the top distribution spot at Baron Capital Group.

Hatteras bought into the mutual fund space last summer, taking over Alternative Investment Partners, sponsor of the Alpha Hedged Strategies Fund and the Beta Hedged Strategy Fund (both mutual funds of hedge fund strategies). The Raleigh, North Carolina-based asset manager now boasts $1.8 billion in assets, inside of hedge funds, a fund of hedge funds, a private equity fund of funds and a venture capital fund, as well as its mutual funds.

Perkins praised Jacobs as "a proven leader ... who can take Hatteras to the next level." Jacobs, in turn, described himself as "thrilled to join Hatteras."

"We are in a position to grow," Jacobs stated. "The firm selectively partners with best-in-class alternative investment managers possessing an identifiable edge to create portfolio solutions designed for financial advisors."

He will advance our mission to bring institutional-quality alternative investments to financial professionals and their clients, while providing the education and support they need to invest with confidence. We believe alternative investments are now at an inflection point, we want Hatteras to continue to be the choice for financial professionals."

“I’m thrilled to join Hatteras and the executive team David has assembled. The Hatteras team has built an ideal model with a remarkable infrastructure to help financial advisors and their clients,” said Mr. Jacobs. “With demand for alternative investments growing, Hatteras has clearly distinguished itself among its competitors with its investment management, distribution, and operations excellence. “The firm selectively partners with best-in-class alternative investment managers possessing an identifiable edge to create portfolio solutions specifically designed for financial advisors. Hatteras adds an additional layer of investment management, risk management, and due diligence to truly enhance the products it offers,” continued Mr. Jacobs. “We will continue to help advisors achieve their goals by delivering a spectrum of alternatives and educating them on how to integrate these products with traditional investments.”

Founded in 2003, Hatteras Funds manages $1.8 billion across a broad range of alternative investment strategies. These include:

  • open-end mutual funds with multiple hedge fund managers and strategies managed by the Hatteras investment team.

From 2000 to 2008, Mr. Jacobs was Managing Director at Allianz Global Investors, where he led sales and distribution of the PIMCO and Allianz mutual funds, as well as managed accounts and closed-end funds to the financial advisor community. While there, he managed 200 employees and the firm’s assets grew from $20 billion in 2000 to more than $140 billion in 2008. Immediately before joining Allianz / PIMCO, Mr. Jacobs spent ten years with Eaton Vance as Director of Sales. During his tenure, assets at Eaton Vance grew from $8 billion in 1990 to more than $80 billion in 1999. Most recently, Mr. Jacobs was Chief Distribution Officer at Baron Capital. He began his career in 1984 as a financial advisor in New York.

Active in industry forums, Mr. Jacobs served as the 2008 Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Money Management Institute (MMI) and is a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Financial Planning. He earned a BA in Economics from Montclair State University and he holds the Certified Investment Management Analyst SM (CIMA®) designation.

To further its leadership position in alternative asset management, Hatteras will bring aboard additional top talent in sales and client services in the near future. The firm expects no fundamental changes to its institutional-quality investment management, risk management, and due diligence processes.
