Dan McNamara USAA Investment Management and Financial Planning President

The former president of Banc of America Investment Advisor took the top job at USAA's asset management arm at the end of last year. He is developing the strategy for one of the most interesting emerging players in the fund industry. Texas-based USAA has built a strong brand for its funds to its core market, veterans of the armed services and their families.

One of McNamara's challenges will be to let the rest of the investment world onto USAA's story. That challenge stems from USAA's historically closed structure for some of its businesses. It started as an auto insurer open only to officers from 1922 to 1996 when it opened its pool to active service members. It was not until last year, that the firm opened its insurance to all honorably discharged veterans.
