A Former Fundster Journalist Dies in a Cycling Accident

News summary by MFWire's editors

A former editorial director of Money Management Executive and other Source Media Publications died over the weekend while riding his bike.

Multiple publications report that Tom Steinert-Thelkeld, 59, was hit by a car (possibly two cars) while cycling on Route 302 in Bethel, Connecticut at about 2:45pm on Sunday. He subsequently died at Danbury Hospital. According to a police statement, witnesses claimed that one of the two cars fled the scene. The investigation is still open.

BtoB Online, the Danbury Daily Voice, FishbowlNY, MSPmentor, Multichannel News, the NewsTimes, PCMag, Traders Magazine, WesportNow.com, the Weston Daily Voice, and the Weston Forum (twice) all reported on Steinert-Thelkeld's death or ran obituaries.

A native of New Jersey, Steinert-Threlkeld's journalist career spanned technology's intersection with the financial services and media worlds. At Source Media he was involved in a number of publications, including Investment Mandate Pipeline, Securities Technology Monitor and Traders magazine, as well as MME. He left Source Media earlier this year and took a post as editorial director of B2B publishing at the International Business Times' IBT Media.

He also founded Baseline magazine and wrote for the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was also editor-in-chief of cycling website Edge of the Road.

Steinert-Thelkeld (nicknamed TST) is survived by his wife, Kayte, and by his two sons, Shane and Zack. The family will hold a memorial service at 11am on Saturday at Cobb's Mill Inn in Weston, Connecticut. Instead of flowers, the family is directing donations (in Steinert-Thelkeld's name) to the Weston Warm-Up Fund and the Connecticut Humane Society.
