This week
Josh Charlson,
Morningstar's director of manager research for alternative strategies,
looked into his crystal ball and shared a snapshot of who would be in the running for alternatives fund manager of the year if the year were already over. The likely contenders, according to Charlson, would be:
the Gotham Absolute Return Fund, PMed by Robert Goldstein and Joel Greenblatt;
the John Hancock Alternative Asset Allocation Fund, PMed by Bob Boyda and Steve Medina, heads of Hancock's portfolio solutions group;
the Robeco Boston Partners Long/Short Equity Fund, lead PMed by Bob Jones, one of Boston Partners' founders;
the Robeco Boston Partners Long/Short Research Fund, an alt manager of the year nominee last year, PMed by Boston Partners CEO Joseph Feeley and research director Eric Connerly;
the TFS Market Neutral Fund, winner of the first alt manager of the year award two years ago, PMed by Kevin Gates (TFS co-founder), Rich Gates (co-founder), Larry Eiben and three others; and
the Vanguard Market Neutral Fund, co-PMed by Michael Roach, James Stetler and James Troyer.
